Algoma U helps high school seniors transition into post-secondary education

Two schools are coming together to bridge the gap for high school students. Starting this Tuesday, 50 Grade 11 and 12 students from the Peel District School Board will have their first day of school at Algoma University which has a campus location in Brampton. It’s part of their inaugural Learners Early Access Program, also known as LEAP. The university hopes the free program will make transitioning from high school to university easier and teach students that obtaining a post-secondary education is possible. “It prioritizes Black and Indigenous and equity deserving groups from our local Brampton and Mississauga high schools, and offers the high school classes, university classes and certificate program in partnership with Unity Technologies,” said Rebecca Rucurean, Director of Student Recruitment at Algoma University.University courses that students have the option to take are: Intro to Canadian Business, Introduction to Esports Management, and Computer Applications. YELLOWKNIFE — Residents of Yellowknife and a nearby First Nation who have been evacuated for weeks due to wildfires are being told to start planning now for their return home, beginning Wednesday.Officials with the Northwest Territories and Yellowknife governments told a news conference that residents who will be driving home are responsible for their own food and accommodation on their way back, and that they should prepare to be self-reliant for 72 hours upon their return. They say that means bringing along prescriptions, non-perishable food and cash.Residents who left Yellowknife on evacuation flights are encouraged to pre-register for return flights home, either online through the territory’s public safety web page or by phone lines which are already open.Officials say the pre-registration will enable them to plan how many flights home will be needed, as well as where to dispatch the planes.Only essential workers who have been contacted are being allowed back now, and ever...

Two suspects have been arrested in connection to a shooting death in Aurora’s Dayton Triangle neighborhood.Donald Howard, 18, and Jordan Zachary Leday, 27, both face a first-degree murder charge as suspects in the Monday shooting of a 20-year-old victim in the 1500 block of South Galena Way, the Aurora Police Department said in a news release.Howard was arrested Wednesday by the Regional Anti-Violence Enforcement Network as part of a Colorado Organized Crime Control Act investigation. Leday was arrested Wednesday on an outstanding warrant by Aurora police. An investigation is ongoing.

Human remains discovered under Playa del Rey bridge

Authorities are investigating after a body was discovered under a bridge in Playa del Rey on Saturday.The body was found in a “shed-like structure in a concealed space" below the Culver Boulevard bridge shortly before 11 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The remains were identified as an approximately 40-year-old man. Police are investigating the case as a suspicious death.When authorities arrived at the scene, they encountered a foul odor that led them to a livable structure built into the rafters and pipes beneath the bridge.Rescue crews worked to extricate the man from the confined space near the Ballona Creek flood control channel but said access to the shed proved difficult. Think Tom Brady (Junipero Serra High School), Marshawn Lynch (Oakland Tech) and Davante Adams (Palo Alto High School).As for teams, there isn't much debate on who the dominant Bay Area high school football program is. De La Salle High School in Concord, at one point, won 151 straight games from 1992 to 2004.In a list released last week, ESPN named its top 50 high school football teams of all time.
