Healey proposes new statewide missing persons unit

Governor Maura Healey is working to establish a statewide missing persons unit. The envisioned $300,000 investment is part of a new $55 billion state budget proposal from Healey. The unit would include 300 officers focused on missing persons and unidentified human remains. Training would include the use of forensics, digital evidence and geolocation technology. This announcement this week came just days after investigators announced they had identified a 1978 murder victim known as “Granby Girl.”The woman’s remains were found nearly 45 years ago in the woods. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later ruled her cause of death to be a bullet wound to the temple. Decades later, officials said genetic testing led them to identify the woman as Patricia Ann Tucker. Officials said her husband, who died in 1996, is a person of interest in the case.

Rape, drugging charges against high-profile RI basketball trainer dismissed

A case against a high-profile basketball trainer from Rhode Island has been dismissed, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office announced on Wednesday. Robert McClanaghan was arrested on charges of rape and drugging for intercourse back in November. On Wednesday, the DA’s office announced it is no longer pursuing a prosecution. ”Our responsibility in all cases is to follow the evidence wherever it leads,” the DA’s office said in a statement. “In some cases that endeavor does not add up to a viable prosecution.” “We have a duty to recognize that conclusion and to take the appropriate action when it is reached,” the DA’s office continued. “We have taken that appropriate action today.”An NBA skills trainer, McClanaghan has worked with celebrity basketball players like Steph Curry, Kevin Durant and Al Horford.Writing this week, the DA’s office said it will have no further comment on the case “Out of respect for the privacy of all parties involved.”

Most Democratic voters in New Hampshire want someone other than President Biden to run despite the fact he would beat former President Donald Trump in a second head-to-head presidential matchup, according to new polling.“In a hypothetical 2024 presidential matchup between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, Biden leads Trump 42% to 38%,” pollsters from Emerson College and 7 News WHDH found after sampling over 1,000 Granite State voters.Trump’s support in his own party has not suffered despite several ongoing investigations or the sense that some Republicans want to move on to new candidates amid a slowly broadening field. TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s economy grew at an annual pace of 0.1% in October-December, in a downgrade from an earlier 0.6% increase, showing how the world’s third-largest economy was barely eking out growth.The Cabinet Office’s revised figure for seasonally adjusted gross domestic product, or GDP, for the last three months of 2022 showed growth on quarter was flat, down from an earlier estimate given in February at 0.2% growth.The annual rate shows what the growth would have been if the on-quarter rate continues for a year.Domestic demand shrank 0.3%, worse than the earlier release, showing a 0.2% decline, according to the data released Thursday.
