Boston University women’s ice hockey team skates for National Down Syndrome Society’s ‘Racing for 3.21’ event

The women’s ice hockey team at Boston University skated for a good cause Tuesday, participating in the National Down Syndrome Society’s annual virtual Racing for 3.21 event. The event invites participants from around the world to run, walk, bike, hike, swim and more for 3.21, 32.1 or 321 miles. In Boston, BU student-athletes skated 3.21 miles.Women’s Ice Hockey Assistant Coach Abigail Ostrom skated in honor of her childhood friend, Charlie French, who is an accomplished painter and entrepreneur with Down syndrome. Ostrom on Tuesday said she is happy her team can help raise awareness. The numbers 3 and 21 inspired both the mileage for Racing for 3.21 as well as the date selected for World Down Syndrome Day. Tractor-trailer rolls over, spills gravel at Bourne Rotary

A tractor trailer rolled over at the Bourne Rotary on Tuesday, spilling gravel and prompting a lane closure lasting several hours. State police said the crash happened around 10:10 a.m. involving the truck driven by a 58-year-old Hyannisport man and a Ford Transit van driven by a 39-year-old man from Providence. Police said the Hyannisport tractor-trailer driver sustained suspected minor injuries. The Providence van driver also suffered possible minor injuries, according to police. Police said neither driver was transported to the hospital. Police said the tractor trailer blocked the right travel lane of Route 28 traveling north into the rotary.The lane had reopened as of around 2 p.m., according to state police. Police said the tractor trailer driver was cited for failure to yield.

Jury rules against ex-Haitian mayor, orders $15M in damages

A federal jury on Tuesday ruled in favor of three men who said in a lawsuit that the former mayor of their small town in Haiti subjected them or their relatives to a campaign of political persecution that included a killing, attempted killings and torture.The jury in U.S. District Court in Boston also awarded the plaintiffs more than $15 million in compensatory and punitive damages.Jean Morose Viliena, a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. who now lives in Malden, Massachusetts, was sued in 2017 by three Haitian citizens who say they or their relatives were persecuted by him and his political allies.The lawsuit was filed under the Torture Victim Protection Act of 1991, which allows civil lawsuits to be filed in the U.S. against foreign officials who allegedly committed wrongdoing in their homeland if all legal avenues in their country have been exhausted. SAN DIEGO — Thousands of San Diego Gas & Electric customers were without power Tuesday as a powerful storm moves through the region.According to the utility company’s outage map, approximately 2,701 customers were affected in various communities around San Diego County.The most significant outage was reported in the Encinitas area where 4,013 customers were without power. The majority of customers in this area had power back around 12:45 p.m.In El Cajon, another large outage was impacting 1,384 customers.
