LOUIS - Another committee considers a resolution opposing a large MSD sewer rate hike.MSD wants to raise rates by 32% over the next four years, but a minority report from its own rate commission suggested only a 24% increase. Plans for a new outdoor industry gathering in Denver, which organizers hope will have a national impact in the future, have progressed to the point where the concept will debut with a “soft opening” this coming spring at Civic Center Park.The Outside Festival, which could help fill the void left when the Outdoor Retailer left Colorado for Utah, will be a joint effort involving Boulder-based Outside Interactive Inc., a prominent outdoor media company that includes Outside magazine, along with the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office, which is part of the state’s Office of Economic Development and International Trade. It will be held in conjunction with The Big Gear Show, which will give outdoors vendors a setting to showcase their brands. Longmont beer maker moving in with fellow brewery in Wheat Ridge

Primitive Beer, which has been making and selling specialty sour and wild ales from its elegant Longmont taproom since 2017, said this week that it will close that space and move its barrels and beer-making equipment inside a facility owned by New Image Brewing in Wheat Ridge.Once that happens, in December, Primitive will begin hosting bottle releases and open-koelschip nights beginning in January from “a newly constructed event space nestled within New Image’s production brewery and secondary taproom at 9505 W. 44th Ave., in Wheat Ridge. Denver homeless advocates raise alarm on Catholic Charities shelter after women forced to leave

A Denver nonprofit that advocates for people experiencing homelessness is raising concerns about clients at a Catholic Charities of Denver shelter being asked to leave for minor infractions.Housekeys Action Network Denver reported that a group of women were asked to leave the Samaritan House 48th shelter at 4330 48th Ave. in late September, many of whom were more than 60 years old.The women were written up for infractions such as their beds being two inches past taped lines or not downsizing their items quickly enough, according to a news release from HAND.Women at the shelter were again given warnings in October for having jackets and towels draped over the side of their beds. When residents spoke about the treatment at a meeting with Denver city staff, shelter leaders voided recent write-ups, according to HAND.“This one intervention does not stop the underlying, ongoing causes of this abuse of authority and inhumanity at the shelter,” HAND organizers wrote. “These issues and compl...

Investors abandon ship on DISH Network after shares plunge to 25-year low

Shares of DISH Network plunged to a 25-year low on Monday after the company announced an unanticipated loss in the third quarter and the resignation of CEO Erik Carlson effective Nov. 12.Littleton-based DISH shares fell from $5.49 at the close of trading on Friday to $3.44 at the end of the day on Monday, a decline of 37%. Shares climbed 2.3% on Tuesday to close at $3.51. Over the past year, DISH shares have lost three-quarters of their value.Analysts had expected the company to report positive results in the third quarter, but DISH instead reported a loss of $0.26 a share, down from the $0.65 a share gain reported a year earlier. Revenues also missed estimates, falling nearly 10% to $3.7 billion versus $4.10 billion a year earlier.Pay-TV subscribers decreased by about 64,000 in the third quarter, compared to a net increase of approximately 30,000 in the quarter a year ago. Romell Ward first learned to snowboard while he was in the Army, traveling to resorts around the world with a group of friends who were as diverse as the places they visited.“Every color, every creed,” he said.After moving to Colorado in 2018, Ward continued to enjoy winter sports and often went to the slopes solo. He’d connect with other – mostly white – skiers, who were largely welcoming. But a few unsavory encounters stick with him to this day.Ward recalls how people, emboldened by a few beers, would comment about the lack of people of color who ski.“The jokes start coming in. I’d get dirty looks sometimes walking through like I’m not supposed to be there. Sometimes just outright racial slurs shouted at me as people zip by the hill,” said Ward, who is African-American. “It happens a lot to us.”Ward recognized a need for safe spaces in Colorado snow sports for people of color.
